Hello, I’m Hershel. Welcome to my site.
I’m an interdisciplinary designer who blends a variety of methodologies to facilitate community building, create experiential installations, and tackle pressing social issues. I hold an Honours Bachelor of Global Business & Digital Arts, from the University of Waterloo’s Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, with a minor in Knowledge Integration.
Over the past few years I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of contexts. I led the Interface and Experience Design of a digital education tool to future proof the work force at the Royal Bank of Canada. At Malmö University I facilitated Co-design workshops to address community resiliency in the face of natural disasters. I created programming at Youth Climate Lab to leverage Design Fiction for climate action. I worked with a team of Thought Leaders to develop a youth-informed pandemic recovery plan at the Canadian Council for Youth Prosperity.
In addition to the design world, I have also spent extensive time in the Canadian bush working as a Forest Fire Fighter. As a Fire Ranger Crew Boss, I’ve helped run the day to day operations to suppress forest fires across Ontario and Canada. Working on the front line of the climate emergency has had a direct impact on my design principles. I believe design can be an integral tool in the empowerment of people to imagine futures that are holistically sustainable for cultures and the planet.
